FAQ

Why should I insulate the walls of my home? The main reason that should push you to insulate your walls is the presence of thermal bridges. Thermal bridges have become the number one enemy of our homes. They are punctual places in the walls where the thermal barrier has been interrupted. These thermal bridges can be caused by poor insulation, a lack of insulation or external joinery (doors, windows, frames, shutters) in poor condition. These thermal bridges cause a significant loss of heat accompanied by temperature changes, risk of mold or bad odors. There is only one solution to this problem: insulating the walls of a house. Insulating the walls is one of the priorities during an energy renovation, just after the insulation of the roof. There are plenty of advantages to insulating your walls. First of all, by properly insulating your walls, you avoid all thermal bridges. This means that you can save up to 25% on heating costs. In addition to saving money, proper insulation of your walls will improve the energy performance of your home. This guarantees you comfort: temperatures will remain stable throughout the year. Wall insulation also improves soundproofing. Finally, investing in the correct insulation of your walls means enhancing the value of your real estate assets. Wall insulation can be carried out using two methods: insulation from the outside and from the inside of a home. The method of insulation by the interior is the most frequent. This is due to its low cost. However, professionals advise the method via the outside because it improves the thermal performance and the aesthetics of your facade more. The method of insulation via the interior of a house greatly reduces the living space and involves additional interior finishing. This method has the advantage of not changing the exterior appearance of a house. It is relevant in cases where a house has to comply with specific town planning standards. The external insulation method involves work on the façade. This technique is above all an opportunity to modernize a facade. What are the materials used to insulate the walls?  There are several materials recommended for the insulation of walls. Insulation can be mineral (glass wool and rock wool), synthetic (polyurethane, extruded polystyrene) and biosourced (cellulose wadding, wood wool, hemp wool, sheep wool, cork). It is cheap, non-flammable and easy to install. The glass wool has interesting insulating performances. It has a lifespan of 50 years. However, the installation of glass wool is complex because it is very irritating.rock wool is a good thermal and acoustic insulator. This mineral alternative is affordable and is not combustible. Its insulating performance can last up to 75 years. Rock wool is a little more expensive than glass wool. Unfortunately, rock wool is irritating. A thick layer of insulation will be needed to insulate the walls. Polyurethane is a synthetic insulation available in board or foam form. Polyurethane, also known as PUR, is often used as an alternative to mineral insulation because it offers high thermal insulation. It is relatively easy to install. Unlike glass wool, PUR has the disadvantage of being flammable. Extruded polystyrene is used as insulation in the form of panels. Its insulating power is strong. It is also easy to install. It is mainly used for insulation made by the exterior of a house because it resists easily to bad weather. Extruded polystyrene panels have a few drawbacks. It is not fire resistant and releases toxic fumes during fires. It is not a good sound insulator. Cellulose wadding is a more ecological alternative. It is resistant to condensation and humidity. Biosourced alternatives are often more expensive than glass wool. However, cellulose wadding is a cheap alternative. It has a lifespan of 20 to 60 years. It is not very resistant to humidity. However, it is resistant to mould. There is no insulation material that is supposedly better than another. Each of these insulating materials has its advantages and disadvantages. It is important to choose the one that best suits your needs and budget. A company that specializes in insulation can provide you with more information. They will be able to guide you and accompany you in your selection process. What are the prices for insulating the walls of my home?  The prices for insulating the walls of your home depend on the method used. Insulation from the inside of your home will cost less than insulation from the outside. Insulating from the outside, however, offers many advantages such as increased overall thermal performance. Unlike the interior method, the type of insulation carried out from the outside does not reduce the living area. For total interior insulation, the budget varies from €6,000 to €12,000, all taxes included. A partial insulation via the interior of the house will be from 2 500 to 5 000 €. For a total external insulation, it is necessary to envisage a budget between 8 000 € and 12 000 €, all taxes included. The budget for partial insulation is between €2,000 and €2,500. To give you an idea of average prices for insulating the walls of a house, let's take the example of a 100m2 home. The approximate cost of insulation will be 55 €/m2. Again, it should be remembered that these prices can vary depending on the type of insulation chosen. Mineral insulation is known to be the cheapest on the market. Insulation is priced at 10 € per m2. PUR is priced at about 20 €/m2. Cellulose wadding will cost about 6 €/m2. Generally speaking, the installation varies from 30 € to 50 €/m2. In order to establish a precise budget adapted to your request, it is recommended to ask for an estimate from a professional. Note that the more precise and detailed your request, the closer the quote will be to the final price. TrustUp.be advises you to get several different quotes before making your final decision. Can I benefit from a premium for wall insulation in Belgium? In Belgium, there is an insulation premium specific to each region. In Wallonia, the premium is calculated on the basis of the number of kWh saved thanks to the insulation work. The basic amount is €0.15/kWh saved. This basic premium can be multiplied by 2, 3, 4 or 6 depending on the household income. The lowest incomes can benefit from a premium of €0.90/kWh saved. To benefit from this insulation premium, you must meet the access conditions imposed by each region. In Wallonia, the insulation premium requires an "audit" carried out by an approved person. The auditor comes to make an energy report of your home while pointing out the improvements to be made. In Brussels, the premium is calculated according to three factors: household income, location and the type of insulation used. Insulating walls from the inside is equivalent to a premium of 20 €/m2 to 30 €/m2. The premium for insulating walls from the outside varies from 55 €/m2 to 75 €/m2. The insulating materials must meet certain standards imposed by the Brussels Region. This premium depends once again on the income category of the household. The lower the income, the higher the premium. In the Brussels-Capital Region, an audit is not required, unlike in the Walloon Region. The Brussels insulation allowance is limited to 50% of the total cost of the insulation work.To find out more about the procedures for granting insulation allowances, please refer to the website of your region.Walloon RegionBrussels Capital RegionCan I call on a good insulation company in Belgium?
